Default Engine smokes!

went over to help out a friend that has been having trouble with an engine that he bought from a guy they know. Its a 454 Ci Chevy. They first installed it after the repaint on the 69 camaro (from same guy) and it turns out that it smokes pretty bad. So we took it out and he took it to a machine shop to have it honed and new rings installed etc. Got it back and started it up and it still smokes! So My buddy decided to buy another engine off craigslist, 427 to replace the 454. His dad told him that the first guy that sold him the 454 should help remove and replace it with him. Tonight they started out by removing the intake and noticed that the gaskets looked like they had oil on them, like it was leaking by the gaskets and into the intake ports. The guy reused the old gaskets.

So, they changed the intake from a dual carb set up to a single and started it up and it appeared that it wasn't smoking anymore so the guy left. My friend called me over to help him put everything back on the engine and install the radiator. After we finished it we started it and the sucker smoked!

I told him from day one that I bet it's the valve guide seals or valve guides themselves that are worn out. That's the only thing that is original. He was going to change the seals but my friend decided that he wanted to get the other engine and gave up on him.

So, now tomorrow he is going to tear it out and use the new engine he got. Tonight was a waste of time.

Forgot to update.

Just about to yank the 454 out and install the new 427 he bought when he decided that he wanted to take off the heads and look at them. Now he wants to rebuild them instead of swapping out engines.

Fast forward a week at the machine shop the heads are finished. New valves, springs, porting and polishing, etc... you know the drill.

So, now we have the heads back on the engine and... no smoke!!

Took it out for a spin and wow, that thing has a lot of power!

That's how we got the name Smoky. From the engine smoke. Now the tire smoke. LOL
